- Welcome to "Southern Silky Terriers & Havanese"! I am fullfilling a life-long dream in raising Silky Terriers and Havanese...the most WONDERFUL Breeds ever! After Graduating from the University of Alabama in Elementary Education & receiving my Master's Degree ...I've enjoyed teaching 1st Graders w/ Vestavia Hills City Schools. I am now busier than ever with my Silkys & Havanese. My hope is to let people here in the South become more familiar with these wonderful breeds by exploring my site so they too can discover the delightful breed of the Silky Terrier/ Havanese and the joy of being an owner of one of these wonderful and rare breeds here in the South! BREED INFORMATION
A Kissing-cousin to the Yorkshire Terrier, the Silky Terrier has a coat that is extremely similar, although not quite so long. The Silky's have a very lustrous haircoat that is NON-SHEDDING.Unlike other terriers, this cheerful little dog was not bred to do any particular hunting job, but purely, and most agreeably, to be a companion animal. Nevertheless, its terrier blood shows through in its active, assertive nature, and in the skill it displays killing vermin in its nature country.Sydney was the birth place of the breed, which was known at one time simply as the "Sydney Silky". Australian and Yorkshire Terriers were used as a part of an intricate cross-breeding program to produce a dog that combined the best features of both types. The carefully determined result must be counted as a modern success story. The Silky Terrier was first shown in Australia in 1907, Britain in 1930, and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1933. The Silky is a pretty, lively and intelligent animal that is quick to warn of the presence of strangers. It makes an ideal watchdog and pet for town dwellers with small apartments, but also enjoys country strolls. Terrier in spirit, if not in practice, the Silky is an ideal pet for those who want a small companion with a big heart. WEIGHT AVG. 7-11 lbs HEIGHT AVG. 9-10"
Silky's make an all around well balanced"FAMILY DOG"As a puppy, they adapt very well to their "new family", including most of the other pets that may already reside there. They are very playful and thriveon the attention that a child may offer. They are very intelligentand eager to please, which helpsout tremendously in the "house-breaking"process. Being a Non-Shedding Breed is only a major plus to the many, many wonderfulqualities of the Silky Terrier Breed.
