BREED INFORMATION

A Kissing-cousin to the Yorkshire Terrier, the Silky Terrier has a coat that is extremely similar, although not quite so long. The Silky's have a very lustrous haircoat that is NON-SHEDDING.Unlike other terriers, this cheerful little dog was not bred to do any particular hunting job, but purely, and most agreeably, to be a companion animal. Nevertheless, its terrier blood shows through in its active, assertive nature, and in the skill it displays killing vermin in its nature country.Sydney was the birth place of the breed, which was known at one time simply as the "Sydney Silky". Australian and Yorkshire Terriers were used as a part of an intricate cross-breeding program to produce a dog that combined the best features of both types. The carefully determined result must be counted as a modern success story. The Silky Terrier was first shown in Australia in 1907, Britain in 1930, and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1933. The Silky is a pretty, lively and intelligent animal that is quick to warn of the presence of strangers. It makes an ideal watchdog and pet for town dwellers with small apartments, but also enjoys country strolls. Terrier in spirit, if not in practice, the Silky is an ideal pet for those who want a small companion with a big heart.
